Cheer (Concern and Help for East Elmbridge Retired)

Provides information and advice either via the telephone or home visits to enable people to continue to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible.

Services include :-

  • Advice on available services within the community
  • Filling in forms for benefit claims
  • Befriending scheme to match volunteers to older people who would otherwise be isolated and lonely
  • Events organised throughought the year to help tackle isolation bringing people together

Claygate Centre for the Community

A purpose-built Community Centre for people aged 50 or older that provides a daily programme of activities including Art and Craft Classes, Bingo, Boccia, Card Games and Exercise. Outings to places of interest and special events are arranged throughout the year.

Community Alarms

The Community Alarm Service is available to all residents of Elmbridge. It is especially designed for disabled, older or more vulnerable people enabling them to retain their independence. At the touch of a button a call is automatically made to a care centre which is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you can receive assistance in an emergency at any time of the day or night.

The service offers:-

  • Independence
  • 24 hour commitment to client care
  • No installation fee
  • A useful security aid
  • Regular maintenance checks
  • Information and referral to other support services
  • There is a small weekly charge for the service, although the first 12 weeks are free if you have recently been discharged from hospital and haven’t had an alarm previously.

Times vary between Winter (1 October to 31 March) and Summer (1 April to 30 September) and are due to change in 2016

What can I recycle?
The Centre accepts most household waste, but does not accept asbestos and only accepts small amounts of construction and DIY waste. For a full list of items that you can take to the tip visit Surrey County Council’s website, You can also find out about disposing of hazardous waste.

How can I get a van or trailer permit?
Residents using a van to carry waste will require a permit before entering the Community Recycling Centres. This is to prevent businesses from dropping trade waste at the sites, which is illegal. Find further information and details on obtaining permits at Surrey County Council’s website,



Elmbridge Dial-a-Ride is a door-to-door transport service using specially-adapted vehicles for people of any age with limited mobility, who are unable to use conventional public transport and residents of Elmbridge. This service operates in and around the Elmbridge Borough. There is an annual membership fee and a fare for each journey undertaken.

Esher & Claygate Car Service

Volunteers drive residents of Claygate and Esher to medical appointments in and out of the Borough. They use their own cars, collect clients from their own homes, drive them (and a partner if required) to the appointment, wait and then take them home. Donations are requested – as at February 2016, £3 for journeys within Claygate and Esher and £5 further afield.

For transport to a local GP, ask the surgery’s receptionist to book a driver. For other appointments such as dentists, opticians and local hospitals ring 01372 236240 on weekdays between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Please give a few days notice.

Home-Start Elmbridge

Home-Start helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them. They support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children.

They are constantly looking for volunteers to support families and help with fundraising.

Immediate Response Service (for the over 60s and registered disabled)

This service is free and provides practical support the over 60s or registered disabled. This can involve moving furniture and checking for tripping hazards.

If you are coming out of hospital and need some practical help the service offers support to ease transition from hospital to home ensuring you have essential provisions and check the heating and plumbing are working on your return.

The service can also advise where to hire or purchase disability aids, how to adapt your home, how to apply for Meals on Wheels, Community Transport etc.

Independent Living Centre

The Independent Living Centre is based at Cobham Centre for the Community and provides a wide range of aids to help with daily tasks and keep you independent. These vary from jar openers and pill organisers to walking frames and they are available at non-profit prices. All items are available to order from Claygate Centre for the Community.

Meals on Wheels

Hot meals are delivered to older and disabled people who are unable to prepare meals or to heat frozen meals. The service can be provided long-term or short-term depending on individual needs. The meals are delivered between 12 noon and 2pm by a team of volunteers during weekdays and paid drivers at the weekend.

A Breakfast service is also available and this is delivered with the lunchtime meal and placed in the fridge for consumption the following morning. Further details are available from Community Services at Elmbridge Borough Council.

Sure Start Children’s Centre

Sure Start brings together childcare, early education, health and family-support services for families with children under 5 years old.

It is a government programme which aims to achieve better outcomes for children, parents and communities by:-

Increasing the availability of childcare for all children

Improving health and emotional development for young children

Supporting parents as parents and in their aspirations towards employment

The Claygate & Oxshott branch is currently based at Thames Ditton Centre for the Community.

On Tuesday afternoons there are Baby Clinics, a Drop In Clinic and Buggy Fit classes at Claygate Centre for the Community.

Tree Wardens

Tree wardens are volunteers who care for local trees and provide a contact in the community for tree-related matters.
Our tree wardens are keen to retain the leafy character of Claygate by encouraging new and replacement planting. The tree wardens in partnership with Claygate Parish Council have organised the planting of over 130 highway trees in the last ten years.
